Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day in the ESL Classroom at Whitehall Elementary

At Whitehall Elementary School, celebrating and acknowledging holidays from many different cultures helps create an environment where every child feels valued, respected, and included. Mrs. Kathy Rock works hard to build a classroom community where students learn that differences should be celebrated, not feared. By exposing children to a variety of traditions, languages, foods, music, and customs at a young age, students begin to understand that every family and culture has something meaningful to share. These early experiences help children develop empathy, kindness, and respect for others that will stay with them as they grow into adults.

Recently, students celebrated Cinco de Mayo by learning about Mexican culture and participating in a traditional Mexican hat dance. The activity not only introduced students to a new cultural tradition, but also encouraged excitement and appreciation for diversity in a fun and engaging way. Later in the week, Spanish speaking students worked on a Mother’s Day project, where they were able to incorporate Spanish vocabulary and phrases into special gifts for their mothers. Connecting language learning with cultural celebrations helps students see the value of bilingualism and encourages them to appreciate cultures that may be different from their own.

Teaching children about holidays and traditions from around the world helps create accepting and open-minded students. When children learn early that people may speak different languages, celebrate different holidays, or practice different traditions, those differences become normal and appreciated rather than unfamiliar or intimidating. Activities like these encourage students to include others, ask respectful questions, and develop friendships across cultures.
