Celebrating Better Speech and Hearing Month at WES: Introducing Talker Tuesday!

Baldwin-Whitehall School District

May is Better Speech and Hearing Month, a time to celebrate all the different ways we listen and communicate with one another. At Whitehall Elementary School, we are excited to help students learn that communication can look different for everyone, and every way is important!

Many people use their voices to talk, but that’s not the only way to communicate. Some people use sign language with their hands, and others use AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices. These devices are special tools, like tablets or iPads, that allow individuals to share their thoughts by pressing pictures or buttons that speak words out loud.

To highlight and celebrate these unique communication styles, our Speech Therapists, Karin Janos and Sarah Fibbi, are launching a special series called Talker Tuesday! Each Tuesday in May, they are shining a spotlight on some of our students who use AAC devices to communicate.

These students will help with morning announcements by introducing themselves, sharing information about AAC devices, and showing us all the wonderful ways they express their ideas.

We are looking forward to a fun and meaningful month as we learn together, celebrate differences, and support all voices in our school community!
